ANTWERP TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Firefighters were putting out a burning couch in a home on 62nd Avenue in Antwerp Township when they were told a man on the scene tried to stab himself with a small knife.
When deputies from the Van Buren County Sheriff's office arrived, the man was waving a large butane lighter and threatening both a fire fighter and a deputy. Deputies said he was agitated, uncooperative and refused commands. The man then rushed the deputy but was taken to the ground and subdued.
Matthew Sellars, 35, who is from the Lawton area, was later arrested on outstanding warrants. He was taken to the Van Buren County Jail, where he was held on two outstanding warrants.
Investigators are still considering other charges, including arson, assault on a police officer and firefighter, resisting and obstructing and damage to property, as they review the cause of the fire.
The Lawton and Mattawan police departments, the Lawton fire department and Van Buren Emergency Medical Services all assisted at the scene.
