KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. — A Kalamazoo County woman who was sentenced to life in prison following a 2015 murder conviction has requested a new trial.
Theresa Petto argued her trail lawyer used false information to persuade her to plead guilty but mentally ill to the killing of 25-year-old Rachel Drafta.
Investigators said Petto killed Drafta in Portage in 2015 because the victim was dating her ex-boyfriend.
Petto said her lawyer told her the only way to get mental health treatment was if she pleaded guilty and mentally ill.
A judge is set to hear Petto’s request for a new trial Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019.
