Natural gas customers who are financially vulnerable could get a Google Nest smart thermometer from Consumers Energy.

The company announced Friday that they are giving away 30,000 thermometers to help Michiganders facing high household costs, according to Consumers Energy.

The effort also comes with a reminder that financial help still available for heating bills, officials said.

“Consumers Energy remains committed to helping our friends and neighbors, in the coldest days of winter and as the temperatures hopefully warm soon,” Brian Rich, Consumers Energy’s senior vice president and chief customer officer, said. “We’re excited to provide smart thermostats, which reduce energy waste, in addition to dollars that will keep people safe and warm in their homes.”

The giveaway comes just a month after Consumers Energy announced they would provide $25 million to homes and businesses, focusing on individuals who are facing challenges with their energy bills, officials said.

Broken down, the contribution provides $15 million in automatic bill credits to Consumers Energy electric customers, and $10 million in assistance to vulnerable households.

Natural gas costs have also fallen after rising in 2022 due to inflation and other factors, according to Consumers Energy.

Specifically, the price of natural gas, which impacts power supply costs and makes up approximately half of an individual's total bill, has dropped 24% since October, officials said.

Michiganders in need of financial help are encouraged to call 211, or Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050 if they are facing challenges with their bill.
