LAKETOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A man from the Chicago-area drowned Sunday during a visit to Saugatuck Dunes State Park in Laketown Township.
He was visiting the area with his friends when he died, according to the Allegan County Sheriff's Office.
Around 2:30 p.m., Allegan County deputies were sent to the park on a call about the victim being pulled from the water.
After speaking with the victim's friends, they learned he had been in the water for around 15 to 20 minutes by himself.
Checking on him, his friends enlisted the help of beachgoers and several off-duty medical professionals to pull him from the water and begin trying to resuscitate him.
He was later pronounced dead despite the efforts.
Deputies are withholding the victim's name until they can speak with his family.
