Arts Council hosts Community Arts Awards in Kalamazoo

Local artists were recognized in Kalamazoo's Bronson Park.

A poet and a dance instructor took top honors at the 2017 Community Arts Awards on Sunday.

The Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo presented a number of awards during the annual event. Normally held in Bronson Park, adverse weather forced the program inside, to the First United Methodist Church in Kalamazoo.

The Community Medal of Arts honor was given to poet and artist Elizabeth Kerlikowske and Western Michigan Unviersity dance instructor Nina Nelson for their lifetime contributions to the arts in the region.

The Adam F. Carter Young Artist award was won by Egypt Trinity Wilder.

Also among the winners was:

  • Jeff Mitchell and Joan Herrington received the Gayle Hoogstraten Award for Arts Leadership. Mitchell is the founder and director of the Kalamazoo Academy of Rock. Herrington chairs the Western Michigan University Department of Theater.
  • K-Zoo Folk Life Organization received the Epic Award, which is given to a nonprofit that has played a consistent role in the community.
  • Encore Magazine, taking home the Business Arts award.
