Branch Co. receptionist pleads no contest to embezzlement charge

Stephanie Wilkinson has pleaded 'no contest' to embezzlement and falsifying patient records.

COLDWATER, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Branch County receptionist has pleaded "no contest" to embezzlement after she was caught pocketing hundreds of dollars in fake patient fees.

Now, she's being ordered to pay back thousands of dollars.

Stephanie Wilkinson has been charged with embezzlement and falsifying medical records.

She was fired from her job as a receptionist at the Smile Avenue Dental Office, in Coldwater, after she was allegedly caught stealing money.

According to court documents, Wilkinson was billing patients for services they already paid for.

Police say Wilkinson would pocket the incoming cash payments at the front desk of the dental office.

Police believe this was happening for two years, with one-hundred different embezzlements.

Wilkinson was fired after it was discovered money was missing and patient's charts were incorrect.

Patients blew the whistle on Wilkinson's alleged scheme after they showed receipts that said they had already paid for the dental services.

Wilkinson has entered a no-contest plea, and has been ordered to pay back $17,000.

She will be sentenced on November 7th.
