DOWAGIAC, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A 12-year-old boy is in serious condition after being hit by a bus.

Police say the Dowagiac Middle School student was walking home from school Friday afternoon in the 600 block of Riverside Dr. with some friends when he ran toward the road. The side-view mirror of a Dowagiac Dial-A-Ride (DART) bus hit him.

"He went down and had obvious injuries," said Dowagiac Police Sgt. Daniel Wiggins. "The young man was in obvious pain. Screaming, making noise, not responding verbally."

The crash happened outside an apartment complex. One resident told us the noise of the crash startled him up off his couch.

The boy was taken to a nearby hospital before being airlifted to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.

The operations manager for the Dowagiac DART tells Newschannel 3 the driver of the bus involved in on leave while the investigation continues.

"It doesn't appear to be any alcohol or anything involved like that," said Sgt. Wiggins. "Sounds like it's just an unfortunate accident."

The crash, though, is a wake-up call for some in this small community.

"It's one of our worst case scenarios. They're vulnerable. They're the ones we're supposed to protect. It kind of hits everyone when a child gets hurt," said Sgt. Wiggins.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information should call Dowagiac Police at (269) 782-9743.
