Bill Schuette announces pick for Lieutenant Governor running mate
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- Michigan's Republican gubernational nominee, Bill Schuette, has announced his running mate for the upcoming election.
During a press conference Wednesday morning, Schuette announced the selection of Lisa Posthumus Lyons as his Lieutenant Governor running mate.
Lyons, who was named as one of the "50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan," served three-terms as a member of the Michigan House of Representative from 2011 to 2016.
While chair of the House Education Committee, Lyons was a leader on education issues in the legislature.
She also served as the leader of the House Elections & Ethics Committees.
Before becoming the current Kent County Clerk/Register of Deeds in 2016, Lyons served as Assistant Majority Floor Leader in the House.
“In Lisa Posthumus Lyons we have a person of great talent. Her service in the Michigan legislature was exceptional. She led the education committee and understands that reading is the key ingredient for Michigan’s ability to grow,” said Schuette. “I have known Lisa for many years. I value her leadership on policy in the state legislature and admire her as a mother and wife with a great commitment to her family. In fact, Lisa comes from a family of accomplishment and service to Michigan. Lisa will be an outstanding Lieutenant Governor and I am proud she has joined our campaign to take Michigan forward as a growth state and paycheck state.”
Lyons said she is excited to join the Republican ticket.
“When I entered the legislature, Michigan was flat on its back. But we worked hard, reformed government, and got Michigan back on its feet,” said Lyons. “We are fighting for the families of this state who cannot afford the higher taxes and fees that Gretchen Whitmer will bury them with, making it harder to afford healthcare, college tuition, or even just food on the table. With Bill Schuette as governor and Donald Trump as president, Michigan's economy will grow with more population and bigger paychecks."
Lyons is also known for her efforts to protect the victims of sexual assault. While in legislature, Lyons' bill allowing a victim of sexual assault that results in pregnancy to petition for an end of parental rights by the assailant was passed into law.
Shortly after Schuette's announcement, the Michigan Democratic Party released the following statement:
“Lisa Posthumus Lyons is a Betsy DeVos hand-picked candidate, who shows once again that Bill Schuette is running for governor to put special interest donors ahead of Michigan’s middle class. Lyons mocked public school teachers who were losing their jobs, and has been a part of the failed status quo in Lansing that let our roads crumble and dirty water run through our taps. Michigan families want new leadership to finally prioritize our working families – not more of the same Republican failures.”
