On Thursday The Kellogg Company announced 79 jobs will be eliminated as part of corporate restructuring.

A company spokesperson said 67 jobs would be eliminated in Battle Creek and the rest would be spread across other operations.

Some fear there could be a ripple effect that harm downtown businesses who depend on the Kellogg workers. The cereal city's largest employer is in the middle of some major restructuring.

“It’s devastating, it’s a sad day,” Angela Chapman, of Battle Creek, said.

The cuts would take effect in late February.

“What's going to happen? Do you they have to sell their homes? Are they going to have relocate? Are they're going to have a job?" said Chapman.

In a statement a company spokesperson said, "To ensure we have the right balance of resources in our global growth team, we announced the elimination of some roles and the creation of others to support new priority capabilities."

Thursday’s news is the latest in several rounds of layoffs in Battle Creek in the past several years.

Kailey Fulmer, a cosmetologist at Elwell Salon in downtown Battle Creek, was concerned about the job loses.

“In the past four years, I've noticed a decline in Kellogg’s employees,” said Fulmer.

She said a sizable base of her clientele were Kellogg workers.

“it's unfortunate to see the layoffs at Kellogg. I have a lot of friends, family and clients there. It's devastating,” Fulmer said.

The news of the layoffs cane on the same day Kellogg reported losses of $84 million during the final three months of 2018.

“You think you're going to retire from here and give a good life to your family, and it's not going to be happen. Now you don't know what the future is going to hold especially in a big place like Kellogg,” Chapman said.

The city of Battle Creek said it would continue to work with Kellogg and help the company out.
