Back to School Bash aims to help get kids ready for upcoming school year

The back-to-school checklist seems to grow every year. From new supplies, to clothes, doctor visits and other essentials, it's easy to get behind.

However, one annual event in Kalamazoo is helping families get most of those tasks done in one place.

The Back to School Bash enters it's ninth year this fall with the Family Health Center. The event offers free backpacks with school supplies and hygiene kits for kids. It is also a one-stop shop to get up to date on your immunizations.

Kristi Edwards with the Family Health Centers said the event helps families because hundreds of students are sent home on the first day of school every year because they are behind on their shots.

"Throw a great big party to make it fun," Edwards said. "But, then also get the kids in so they're prepared for school and they're fully immunized and they're ready for a healthy start of the school year, that's our goal."

This year's event will happen on Friday, August 17, from 12 to 5 p.m. at the Family Health Center main campus at 117 W. Patterson Street. Families are asked to register their kids ahead of time by calling 269-349-2641.

"If we can create a win win for the community, throw a great big party to make it fun, but then also get the kids in so they're prepared for school and they're fully immunized and they're ready for a healthy start of the school year, that's our goal," Edwards said.
