Amnesty Day gives Kalamazoo residents opportunity to get criminal record in order

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety

Kalamazoo will host a special event this week to help some people get their criminal record and lives in order.

Amnesty Day is set for Friday. People with outstanding, low-level misdemeanor warrants can get their affairs in order through a fast-tracked process.

They'll be pre-screened at the First Congregational Church then will be taken to court where attorneys will help them get their cases mediated.

After that, they will be connected with area services at an event in Bronson Park to help them get jobs and get their lives on track.

“Giving this opportunity for people to clean up some warrants that they have is a great opportunity to move forward for people's lives,” KDPS assistant chief Vernon Coakley said. “It makes our community healthier it makes Kalamazoo move faster.”

The assistant chief warns the event is not for anyone accused of a felony. If you show up and have a felony warrant you will be arrested.
