The wait is over for those in West Michigan looking forward to the opening of AMC Theatres in Kalamazoo.

The newest AMC Theatre in downtown Kalamazoo is set to open Thursday, AMC announced at a ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning.

All 10 screens will be operating starting at 7 p.m., and among the inaugural films will be Thor: Ragnarok. Tickets will be available at the theater, said Ryan Noonan, the director of corporate communications for AMC.

AMC will occupy the former location of Alamo Drafthouse, which closed in April, on Portage Street.

While only the standard popcorn, candy and pop will be available Thursday, the theater plans to have a bar operating by next week and broader food options down the road, Noonan said.

AMC has 346 theaters in North America, and more than 1,000 worldwide, while employing about 45,000 in full- and part-time positions. More than 200 locations have added plush, power recliners, and nearly 250 serve beer, wine and cocktails to adult guests, according to the company’s website.

Kalamazoo will be the company's third location in West Michigan, with others in Holland and Grand Rapids.

AMC is the third tenant at the downtown movie theater location, following the Alamo Drafthouse and the Rave Theater.
