93-year-old Portage woman pumps serious iron
PORTAGE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A 93-year-old woman from Portage just hit her 1,000th workout at a local exercise facility!
Curves in Portage tells NewsChannel 3 Kay Didas is the oldest member to ever hit this milestone.
"You don't do this overnight!" Didas laughs.
The 93-year-old hits the gym three days a week.
She actually starts her exercise regimen with an hour of low-impact aerobics at the Portage Senior Center, then heads straight to Curves for a half hour of circuit training.
On how she manages to keep up her healthy habits, Didas says, "If you have a positive attitude, you can't miss!"
Didas tells NewsChannel 3 she was never really an athlete, but there is good reason for that.
"They didn't have the athletes when I was in school," she chuckles.
Didas was born in 1921.
She says back then, health clubs did not exist either.
She has been exercising at gyms since she retired in the 1960s.
But it hasn't always been easy.
"There is no excuse not to be active," Didas explains. "I had a head that had two tumors on it. I had to have a brain operation. Had to take two months off you know."
Curves Owner Rochelle Thompson adds, "She was back as soon as the doctors released her! She was back working out. It was amazing. She is such an inspiration to everyone here. We all look up to her."
The poster child of fitness, Didas is not really in it for six-pack abs, she simply loves the people.
"There's always a smile and a hello and that means a lot," she says.
Her advice to NewsChannel 3 viewers? It's never too late to get healthy.
Didas will be 94 next month.
