4-year-old involved in Kalamazoo murder-suicide has died

4-year-old Nick Mitchell has died.

A Kalamazoo neighborhood is in shock and a little boy has died after a gruesome murder-suicide Thursday.

Family members believe a bitter custody battle ended in a murder-suicide Thursday morning and police said Nicholas Allen Mitchell Jr., 40, shot his ex-girlfriend Julina Gibson, 30, and their 4-year-old son Nicholas Jeffery Mitchell, before turning the gun on himself.

Newchannel 3's Nicky Zizaza spoke to Gibson's brother, who made the terrifying discovery Thursday morning.

Clinton Gibson, Julina’s brother, said he watched the horror play out before his eyes.

He said, “She was loving caring she stayed with a job, her main focus was her kids. Her other baby daddy is in prison. Nobody helped her with anything."

Through tears of shock and heartbreak Clinton is still in disbelief.

He said, "She was laid out with her baby in her arms dead, gasping for air. Her last words were ‘help.’"

Waking up to find his sister Julina Gibson and 4-year-old nephew baby nick bloodied and lifeless at his front door early Thursday morning.

Clinton said, “When he shot my sister, baby Nick jumped on my sister and he was crying, so he shot right over him and he shot the baby right over my sister."

The gruesome discovery made even more horrifying when Clinton realized it was at the hands of baby Nick's father, whose body lay just feet away in a pool of blood.

KDPS Deputy Chief Vernon Coakley said, "The suspect in this incident is Nicholas Allen Mitchell, he is also deceased."

Police said the pair died from apparent gunshot wounds in a murder-suicide.

Clinton said a custody dispute is what led to the deadly violence.

He said, "He just found out he had a child support warrant, she probably antagonized him about that."

"Julina let him get the kid, so he was dropping him off, he must've planned this."

Meanwhile, adding to the heartbreak Gibson says baby Nick looked up to his father.

He said, "baby Nick loved his dad he loved his dad, he cried to go with his dad"

Police said it is an ongoing investigation and the Gibson family is in the process of planning a memorial.

4-year-old Nick Mitchell was involved in the pre-school program at the Kalamazoo Regional Education Service Agency.

KRESA Superintendent Dave Campbell issued a statement: "We were devastated to hear of the tragedy that took place in Kalamazoo early Thursday morning. We extend our deepest condolences to the families involved in this horrific event. Our thoughts and prayers will be with the friends and family of the victims in the difficult days ahead."
