TALLMADGE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A French bulldog breeder from Ohio reported 10 puppies had been stolen and said he found pictures online of the dogs for sale in Ottawa County.
The Holmes County Sheriff's Office in Ohio contacted the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office in Michigan Monday, June 21, 2021. Holmes County deputies asked for help finding dogs that had been stolen from an Ohio breeder. Deputies said an advertisement led them to a 41-year-old mother and 17-year-old daughter in Tallmadge Township who had the 10 dogs, which are worth about $60,000.
"We were able to confirm by chip they were stolen from the Ohio address,” said Ottawa County Cpt. Mark Bennett.
Bennett said the investigation into how the dogs got from Ohio to Tallmadge Township in Ottawa County was ongoing.
He said no arrests had been made in the case, as of June 23.
“Not charged yet, the 41 and 17 year old. But the potential does still exist,” said Bennett.
Jen Self-Aulger, the executive director of Harbor Humane Society in West Olive, was holding the French bulldog puppies after they were taken from the home.\
“The gentleman that came and picked them up were extremely nice and extremely happy to get their puppies back,” said Self-Aulger.
Self-Auger said with puppies sell for $6,000 a piece and that dog thefts were becoming more common.
“We have people in our area that are stealing puppies or getting them from stolen sources and then flipping them. That’s really scary and I think people should be aware of that,” said Self-Auger.
