One man sent to hospital after boating accident on Gun Lake in Barry County
BARRY COUNTY, Mich. —
Barry County officials are investigating a boating accident on Gun Lake that sent one man to the hospital with a serious leg injury on Sunday afternoon.
Barry County Sheriff's Office said a 20-year-old man from Howell, Michigan jumped off the side of an inboard boat around 5:15 p.m. Sunday. During his jump, deputies said the boat turned, causing the back of the boat to swing over the victim; the propeller amputated his leg.
Barry County Sheriff Dar Leaf said the man was transported to a hospital to get his blood drawn because he suspects the driver of the boat was under the influence of alcohol.
Leaf says two doctors who were visiting family, from St. John's Hospital and Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, were on scene and were able to keep the victim alive while medical services arrived. They applied a tourniquet to slow the bleeding , likely saving the victim's life. Officials attempted to call in air care, but were unable to find an available helicopter. The individual was transported via Wayland EMS to a Butterworth Spectrum Hospital.
The accident is currently under investigation. Barry County was assisted by Orangeville Township Fire Department, Martin Township Fire, Wayland EMS, Michigan State Police and Barry County Central Dispatch.
