One man is in custody following an early morning shooting Sunday, Jan. 27 that left a 23-year-old man dead and two others injured, and police are searching for a second suspect, according to Battle Creek Sgt. Todd Elliott.

Police confirmed Friday a 31-year-old man is in custody with charges pending in regards to the death of Wendell C. Daniels of Battle Creek. Elliott said a second man, identified as a 21-year-old from Battle Creek, is also being sought.

Daniels was found unresponsive in a car riddled with approximately 10 bullet holes at the intersection of West Dickman Roads and South Kendall Street at approximately 3:30 a.m. Sunday. Daniels was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Two other men were found injured near the scene and are recovering. A fourth person involved was not injured.

Elliott said the 31-year-old in custody was arrested in Kentwood Thursday evening on weapons charges stemming from a shooting on Jan. 20 at a party store in Battle Creek. Nobody was struck by gunfire in the incident.

Elliott said police are meeting with Calhoun County prosecutor David Gilbert to discuss charges.
