History professor Joellen Vinyard studies hate groups in Michigan -- and there are some.
She said, for the most part, they're just trying to get out a political message.
"It's not that Michigan is just a place filled with hate, but a place with people who are actively concerned and active participants in trying to determine what their fate might be," Vinyard said.
However, she said, "There are people who hover on the fringe or who adopt their uniforms or their symbols."
