It’s no secret that Michigan has some of the best golf courses in the country, hosting a plethora of PGA, Senior PGA and LPGA events throughout the summer.

For the fifth straight year the road to the LPGA has wound its way through Battle Creek, thanks to the Symetra Tour’s Firekeepers Casino & Hotel Championship at the Battle Creek Country Club.

“We have days of great golf," said Kathy George, the chief executive officer at Firekeepers. "We have 144 professionals playing for a $100,000 purse right here in Battle Creek. So all these ladies are professionals competing to become part of the LPGA Tour."

The list of past winners reveals the value of the tournament for rising stars. The previous four winners of the Firekeepers Casino & Hotel Championship went on to careers in the LPGA.

Michigan is well-represented at this year's tournament.

“Ally Geer who just finished her freshman year at MSU and was at the top of the Big 10" is one of the players this week, George said. "We also have Liz Nagel, a Michigan native; so there is a lot of different Michigan people representing the state. ... We look forward to having everybody come out and enjoy the week."

Firekeepers Casino & Hotel has also made attending the tournament an affordable experience. Entry to the tournament will be on a donation basis. Net proceeds will benefit The Haven of Rest, an organization that helps the homeless in Battle Creek.

“All proceeds by donations at the gate of the Battle Creek Country Club are donated to Haven of Rest serving the homeless in the area," George said.

The three-round tournament starts Friday, Aug. 17, and will conclude Sunday, Aug. 19.
