Road Trippin': Downtown Hastings is packed with entertainment
At the center of downtown Hastings is a fountain, quite popular on its own, but the water feature that really attracts the crowds in summer is the Spray Plaza.
The plaza is a splash pad near downtown and not far from the stage that usually hosts a live band or two to entertain the parents while the children play.
Of course, if you hang out close enough to the fountain, you'll get a couple of spritz there too.
Patty Woods, who chairs the Hastings Downtown Development Authority, said there are a number of events happening downtown, some aimed at children and others for adults.
“We have different events coming in on Thursdays at 11,” Woods said. “Those events are really aimed at children.”
Among them recently was a drummer, who worked out some beats with the children. After the drumming session, the children were allowed to run through the Spray Plaza to cool off.
“During the week we have other musical events,” Woods said. “Fridays we have bands that come in and play at our fountain at noon. On Wednesday and Friday night at 7:30 we have other musical groups coming in to our Thornapple Plaza, which is three blocks down from here.”
Woods said those who come for the music might also enjoy grabbing a bite at some of Hastings’ unique restaurants or visiting the shops while attending the events.
“We also have many sculptures throughout town,” Woods said. “We have a brochure that we’ve created so that you can pick it up, and you can do a self-guided tour through town. We own some of the sculptures. Every year we get new ones. The sculptures change from year to year. We have a lot of school groups that come down to look at them.”
