The Borgess Mobile Unit is giving local patients another opportunity to take advantage of convenient, low-cost care.

The Heart and Vascular Screening Center will house trained professionals to provide state-of-the-art technology and thorough checks of the heart, arteries and veins. All studies are reviewed by board-certified physicians and the results are sent directly to the patient.

Sean O’Brien, a vascular surgeon at Borgess Medical Center, recommends the screenings. He said they can help detect certain underlying issues, making surgery or intervention, if necessary, more successful.

“Once you’ve had a stroke, it’s often times too late and once you’ve ruptured an aneurysm, you may die. So, trying to pick it up ahead of time is very important,” O’Brien said.

To stay on top of your vascular health and avoid the aforementioned conditions, O’Brien suggested seeing your doctor regularly. He also said everyone should have one of these basic screening studies by age 50. If you are a smoker, have a family history of diabetes, hypertension or if you have any of those issues, he said to get checked out by age 30 or 40. O’Brien said if there is an issue, it’s possible there will not be symptoms.

“It happens out of the blue,” O’Brien said. “So, unless you get a screening study, you’ll never know you have the underlying problem.”

The screenings do not include needles, pokes or pain. Instead, they provide priceless information that isn’t pricey at all.

“I think from the monetary stand point, this is unbeatable and it may save your live or save a stroke or some other major problem," O'Brien said.

The heart and vascular screenings are $60 a patient. The mobile unit will be set up from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at the Borgess Health Park. All appointments are currently booked.

Organizers are planning events for July and August. If you are interested in making an appointment, call 269-226-5015.

There are open appointments for the student heart checks. Screenings are $30 a patient. Those screenings include a checkup and EKG.

All appointments take about 15 minutes.

The EKGs are then read by a Borgess cardiologist.

Results are sent to the participants home within 30 days.

Registration is required; to schedule an on-site screening, call 269-226-5015.
