State identifies 25 new COVID-19 school-related outbreaks in Dec. 14 report

The Michigan health department reported 25 new outbreaks at schools and universities Monday.

Of the 25 outbreaks reported Dec. 14, 2020, nine were schools in West Michigan counties, including:
Allegan County
- Brandon Elementary School: Two positive cases reported in staff
Berrien County
- Brown Elementary School: Three positive casers in both staff and students
- Brandywine Middle/High School: Two positive cases in staff
- Lakeshore High School: Two positive cases in students
- Blossomland: Four positive cases in both students and staff
Ottawa County
- Early Childhood Center - Allendale: Two positive cases in staff
- Coopersville South Elementary: Three positive cases in staff
- El Puente Spanish Immersion: Two positive cases in both staff and students
- Sandy Hill Elementary: Two positive cases in staff
State officials label an outbreak as two or more cases “with a link by place and time indicating a shared exposure outside of a household."
The Food and Drug Administration approved the first COVID-19 vaccine Friday, Dec. 11, for emergency use.

Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, the top medical official at the Michigan health department, rolled out a four-phase plan for distributing the vaccine with health care workers as first priority.
