OTTAWA, Kan. (SBG) — A sheriff's office went above and beyond to help a mother in need this holiday season.
The Franklin County Sheriff's Office says it all started when they began receiving service calls for a woman walking along a highway. After deputies had responded numerous times and given the 24-year-old woman several rides to work, they learned she had been walking six miles to work and six miles back home so she could provide for her two young children.
A small group of deputies got together and in a few days gathered the funds to purchase a van for the woman with the help of the community, businesses, and money raised from "No Shave November."
"This is not just something they did, this shows who they are. I am proud of who they are! This is an example of their commitment to serve our community," Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Richards said in part in a statement.
The sheriff's office also donated two new car seats, $200, a gift card to a grocery store, and the first year of car insurance paid for.
