Two women were arrested Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2020 after an attempt to smuggle drugs and cell phones into Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater.

Police said the women face charges of felony conspiracy to commit forgery and felony conspiracy to smuggle contraband into a prison. They also said a Lakeland inmate, who has since been moved to a prison in Ionia, was charged with felony conspiracy to smuggle contraband into a prison.

In February 2019, Michigan State Police troopers were called by Lakeland staff about a FedEx package they had received. Drugs and cell phones intended for prisoners were inside.

An MSP investigation began along with the Michigan Department of Corrections. Investigators identified the inmate and women during the investigation.

After traveling to Detroit, Dearborn, Lansing, Paw Paw and the Indianapolis area, investigators located the suspects. One of the women was 35 years old from Dearborn. The second was 33 years old from Detroit.

The two women and the inmate were awaiting arraignment as of Tuesday. State troopers said their names would be withheld until then.
