Battle Creek man dies 9 days after stabbing, girlfriend arrested

Battle Creek police arrested a 65-year-old woman Wednesday in connection with the stabbing death of her boyfriend.

Battle Creek detectives said they want charges of murder brought against the woman after Walter May, 61, died at his apartment at 38 College St. Dec. 14, 2020, nine days after being stabbed.

The woman called 911 and said he was having trouble breathing.

The preliminary autopsy report showed May died of a stab wound.

Police were also called to the apartment on Dec. 5 where he was found sitting on his couch with a stab wound to the chest. He told police he was fine, nothing happened, and he didn’t need to go to the hospital.

Officers said they were able to find a steak knife covered in blood and hair.

Police searched the woman’s home Dec. 15 and said they didn’t find anyone home. However, the woman was eventually found and arrested.

Her name has not been released, pending her arraignment.
