Second Missionary Baptist Church in Battle Creek was scheduled to host a pop-up COVID-19 testing site Thursday, Dec. 17.

A written statement from the Michigan State Police said the testing site would be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“In an effort to increase testing site locations, we have worked with community partners who can host one-day testing events in addition to the 22 sites with regular days and hours,” Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, Michigan's chief medical executive, said. “Locations were chosen in part to help address racial and ethnic disparities that existed prior to the pandemic and were exacerbated by the virus. More than 43,000 Michiganders have been tested at one of the Neighborhood Testing Sites since they opened in August.”

According to the statement, the test site would offer saliva tests to provide a less invasive experience than a nasal swab. Test results would be available by phone or email, or by logging into the state's results portal.

Although walk-in patients would be accepted, officials encouraged people to make appointments by calling the COVID-19 hotline at 888-535-6136 and selecting “1,” or by signing up online.

Language translation and assistance for the deaf and hard of hearing would be available.
