Consumers warning of new telephone scam

WEST MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Consumers Energy is warning customers about telephone scams that say you must pay your bill using prepaid credit cards.

More than 300 incidents have been reported this year, where callers falsely claim to be Consumers Energy representatives.

Those callers will tell you to pay for your bill within the hour and you must do it by purchasing a specific prepaid credit card.

They then direct you to an 866 toll-free number to pay the bill with the card.

Consumers says it never demands payment over the phone with a specific card, and customers should never give information to anyone they don't know.
