Semi crashes, explodes, on I-94

SHERIDAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Crews worked to clean up a deadly semi crash on I-94 Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened just before 8:00 Tuesday morning in the westbound lanes in Sheridan Township, near Albion.

The highway was down to one lane for several hours.

Police tell us the semi-truck was heading westbound on I-94 when it tried to avoid traffic from a crash up ahead. It went off the road, hit multiple trees and that is when the truck burst into flames.

"He avoided hitting other vehicles that were stopped and slowed on the freeway," said one investigator.

Sheriff's department officials tell us the driver of the semi swerved too far off the road after trying to avoid stopped cars ahead, resulting in this deadly crash.

A picture snapped by a viewer shows just how intense the flames were.

"The semi-tractor trailer hit multiple trees and caught fire. There was a state trooper in route to training. He stopped and tried to get the individual out of the cab but was unsuccessful," said Det. Steve Hinkley of the Calhoun County Sheriff's Dept.

The truck was hauling boxed of beans, which spilled everywhere and also caught on fire.

Fire crews were called in because the flames spread to some nearby trees.

Detectives some time Tuesday reconstructing the crash to figure out just what happened.

The freeway reopened around 1:15.

The sheriff's department is not yet releasing the name of the driver. We will keep you updated when all lanes are back open.
