Two charged in Park Twp. man's beating death

HOLLAND, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Two people are now charged with beating a man to death in Ottawa County.

In January, the body of 38-year-old Jose Hernandez was found in the snow outside the Amberwood Apartments in Park Township.

Investigators say Hernandez's ex-girlfriend, MaryAnn Castorena, and his former roommate Anthony Delagarza are to blame.

The two were arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Holland.

According to documents obtained by Newschannel 3, when police executed a warrant on January 9 at Castorenas' apartment, they found a handwritten note in her room, that offered--among other things--instructions similar to how Hernandez is believed to have died.

The note also reportedly instructed the recipient to do it by (Hernandez's) car, and to be careful so as not to void the policy.

Investigators say that between a life insurance policy, stocks and other benefits, Castorenas stood to gain $1.25 million from Hernandez's death.

They say this was likely the motive in the case.
