W. Mich. man remains hospitalized after 'cold water challenge' injury

STURGIS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A West Michigan man remains in the hospital after taking part in a dangerous Internet game that left him paralyzed, but we're told his condition is improving.

Last week, Newschannel 3 spoke with a family friend who pulled 32-year-old Tommy Smith from Grey Lake after he attempted the Cold Water Challenge.

The friend, DeeDee Taylor, says Smith is still at Borgess, but is responding to treatment and is awake and talking.

Doctors say Smith is paralyzed from the waist down, and more surgeries are needed.

Friends of the family are still working on getting a fundraiser together to pay for medical costs.
