Suspect in Wayside West fatal shooting facing possible life sentence

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Kalamazoo bar employee has been charged with murder Friday in connection with the deadly shooting inside Wayside West.

We've learned that his name is Orlando Mitchell. He is facing one count of open murder and one count of felony firearm. His bond was denied.

We've also learned the Liquor Commission is reviewing the incident at Wayside West and is working with KDPS to investigate.
   
23-year-old Damian Tejada was shot and killed inside the crowded bar on Stadium Drive about a half hour before closing time Thursday.

Police say the young father got into a confrontation with 23-year-old Mitchell, who works at the bar, before the employee pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times.

Mitchell was arrested a short time later.

Less than 12 hours after the shooting Wayside was back open and many patrons tell us it was business as usual.

Mitchell faces life in prison if convicted.
