Cinderella Project helps girls find dresses for prom

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) If you have an old prom dress collecting dust in the back of your closet, now is your chance to do something special with it!
The Cinderella Project is taking in dress donations for its big giveaway this Saturday in Kalamazoo.

The event provides free dresses to girls who cannot afford to buy one for the prom.

We know it's not the biggest need in the world but it is something really nice and special and lets those girls feel like a princess, says event founder Adrienne Wissner, owner of Memories Bridal and Evening Wear.
The biggest way you can help the Cinderella Project is to donate a dress. Wissner says they really need donations of plus-size dresses this year.

We've been very fortunate and have had so much help getting donations from everybody, Wissner adds. People really latch on to this event and think it's a great thing.

Each teenage Cinderella will work with a personal shopper and volunteer seamstress during Saturdays event.

Coordinators say pairing a girl with her perfect prom dress is a magical moment.

We get a lot of hugs and we get a lot of tears too, Wissner says. A lot of the time it's coming from the moms especially because they want to be able to give this experience to their daughters, they know how important it is and how special it is, but that they can't do it themselves.

The Cinderella Project currently has 1,500 dresses ready for this years giveaway, in all colors, sizes and styles. But they are still looking for more, especially ones size 20 and up.
These dresses are typically one-wear dresses, says Wissner. We all love them, we all cherish them, but we know they're probably only going to be worn that once. So this is a great chance to clean out your closet and know that it's going to a good cause and that some girl is absolutely going to love it and you're going to help make some prom dreams come true.
The Cinderella Project dress giveaway will take place Saturday, March 29 from 10am to 2pm at the Girl Scouts building in Kalamazoo.
The event is open to any high school age girl.  The dresses are free.
You can donate a dress for this year's event through Thursday at Memories Bridal and Evening Wear.
