US, Cuba to normalize relations  The United States and Cuba have agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations and open economic and travel ties, marking a historic shift in U.S. policy toward the communist island after a half-century of enmity dating back to the Cold War, American officials said Wednesday.

2 dead in Naval Base shooting in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A base spokesman says two people were killed in a shooting at Naval Station Norfolk.

Captain Robert Clark, the Commanding Officer says it happened around 11:20 Monday night.

There was a report of shots fired, he says Naval Security Forces responded and secured the scene .

Clark says a civilian with access to the base made his way to the USS Mahan docked at pier 1.

It's not clear at this time if he had permission to be aboard the destroyer or how or when the suspect may have obtained a weapon.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Services is leading the investigation.

Naval Station Norfolk is the largest naval installation in the world.
