Family displaced after water heater explodes in Allegan home

ALLEGAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Breaking overnight, a West Michigan family escapes their house as it goes up in flames.

Newschannel 3 is told a water heater exploded, causing a fire that destroyed the home in Allegan County.

Video sent in from a viewer shows huge flames shooting out of the home that could be seen all over the neighborhood. Firefighters say they were called to the house on M-40 outside the city of Allegan just before 11 p.m. Saturday.

The family says they called for help after their water heater exploded. They were able to get out safely, but the blaze tore through the house and it's a total loss. Crews fought the fire for several hours.

"The Allegan County Sheriff's Office did provide patrol units to shut the highway down. Very busy road, so once it was shut down, it helped tremendously," Hamilton Fire Chief David Haverdink says.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Red Cross is helping the family.
