Mich. National Guard opens first cyber range hub on guard base

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Tuesday the Michigan National Guard opened the first national cyber range hub on a guard installation.

A ribbon cutting ceremony took place at 10:30 Tuesday morning at the 110th Airlift Wing in Battle Creek.

Michigan's cyber range initiative pairs extensive cybersecurity resources with hands-on training opportunities to help protect computer systems and sensitive data.

The training center is a public-private partnership between the state of Michigan, Merit Network, federal and local governments, colleges and universities and the private sector.

Three teams across the country are working to break into various virtual networks (library, school, city hall, power company). Teams are trying to find out where the vulnerabilities are from a cyber standpoint so they can fix the issue.

Participants are IT professionals and students who have everyday jobs. They then take their training back to their communities to help protect the state.
