UPDATED: Escaped inmate captured in LaPorte Co., Indiana

LaPORTE COUNTY, Ind. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A convicted killer who broke out of the Ionia Correctional Facility Sunday night has been captured in Indiana.

Michael Elliot was serving a life sentence in the facility after being convicted of killing four people and burning a house down in 1993.

After his escape, investigators say he kidnapped a woman, then traveled from Ionia to Middlebury, Indiana, where she managed to escape while they were at a gas station.

The stolen vehicle was found in Shipshewana, Ind., at an apartment complex, but Elliot was nowhere to be found.

After hours of searching, however, a LaPorte County deputy spotted a reported stolen car, and when the deputy tried to make a stop, the car sped away.

After a short chase, the driver stopped, was identified as Michael Elliot, and was taken into custody.

He is currently being held at the LaPorte County Jail in Indiana, on charges of resisting an officer and being found in possession of stolen property.
