Kalamazoo man arrested on 5th DUI

GOBLES, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A 28-year-old man from Kalamazoo is arrested for the fifth time in two years for drinking and driving, this time with his girlfriend's 4-year-old daughter inside the car.

He was stopped, driving his girlfriend's car, on State Street in Gobles around 7:30 p.m. Friday, for not having a working headlight.

Deputies say he stopped in the middle of the intersection, instead of pulling over. Deputies say the man smelled of alcohol and failed a sobriety test. They say he was nearly three times over the legal limit. His girlfriend was not inside the car. He's also currently in alcohol court in Ionia.

Sgt. Dan Abbott of the Van Buren County Sheriff's Department says, "It's very frustrating. It's bad enough if you are going to go out and drink and drive and put the public in danger, but when you put an innocent child in your hands, especially with that alcohol level, it's very frustrating."

He's facing several charges, including operating while intoxicated and child endangerment.
