Accu-Weather offers tips to help older cars in cold weather

WEST MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - It's been a wicked winter season in West Michigan, and the temperatures can be brutal on our vehicles--especially the older models.

Now, Accu-Weather has put together a list of the biggest ways the cold can damage your car.

First on the list: your battery.

Any time temperatures drop below 30 degrees, the cold takes power away from your battery.

Next on the list is your car's fluids; the cold thickens oils and your brake and transmission fluids, causing them to not flow as easily.

It's also important to keep an eye on your tires.

For every 10 degree drop in temperature, your tires can lose about 1 pound of pressure per square inch.

Two big things can help avoid many of these problems: parking in a garage, and getting regular maintenance done on your car.
