Battle Creek expects new police chief by early summer

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Battle Creek city leaders are still searching for a new police chief.

Chief Jackie Hampton retired at the end of January, after 27 years on the job, and right now, a search firm is advertising nationwide trying to find his successor.

The position is available for internal and external candidates through the end of February, and the firm will choose finalists by the end of April.

The city will offer opportunities for both staff and the public to meet the chief candidates before conducting interviews and making a final decision.

The city says a new chief should be hired by early this summer.
