Deputy suffers minor injuries when police car hit

POLKTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) An Ottawa County deputy is recovering after his car is rear-ended on an expressway Friday night.

It happened on I-96, near mile marker 14 in Polkton Township around 10:40 p.m. Friday. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office says the deputy was responding to help a driver whose car slid into the media.

A tow truck was pulling the car out when the deputy got back into his cruiser. Police say the cruiser was then rear-ended by a pickup truck. The impact pushed the cruiser into the car that was being pulled out of the ditch. That driver was not injured.

The deputy was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for head and leg injuries and released. The driver of the truck, 34-year-old David Jenkins, told police he lost control on icy roads. He was cited for driving too fast for road conditions.
