Police arrest man accused of driving drunk with 4-year-old in the car

GOBLES, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Deputies in Van Buren County arrested a drunk driver Friday night, who had a 4-year-old child in the car.

According to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office, the driver is a 28-year-old Kalamazoo man, who's been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving four other times in the last two years.

It happened at about 7:30 p.m. in Gobles, near State Street and Depot Street.

Deputies say they observed the man stopped in the middle of the intersection, where the traffic light was at a flashing yellow. There was also reportedly a headlight out, so they conducted a traffic stop about the equipment issue and to ask why the man was stopped in the intersection.

Upon discovery of a strong scent of alcohol, the deputy initiated a field sobriety test, and found the driver intoxicated.

As they were placing the driver under arrest, they discovered the 4-year-old girl in the car, and cared for her until her mother could be contacted and pick her up.

Deputies also found that the driver is currently in the alcohol court in Ionia County.

The driver is being held in the Van Buren County Jail Friday night, and his case will be forwarded to the prosecutor's office for review.
