Kent County Commissioner accused of embezzling from diocese

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Kent County Commissioner is accused of stealing money from a West Michigan non-profit.

Michael Wawee Junior is charged with embezzling up to $20,000 from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids.

A spokesperson says Wawee worked full time coordinating and selling services for the five cemeteries the diocese owns.

The diocese contacted police after noticing "irregularities."

Wawee is now on administrative leave.

If convicted, he faces up to 15-years in prison.
