Kent Co. commissioner resigns, effective Feb. 28

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Kent County Commissioner is stepping down in the wake of felony embezzlement charges.

On Thursday, Micahel Wawee Jr. announced he will resign from the Kent County Commission, effective February 28.

Wawee is accused of overcharging families for engraving of grave markers while working for the Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids.

Wawee issued a statement saying "I need to focus my energy on my family and proving my innocence. That unfortunately means I will not be able to dedicate the time necessary to represent my constituents on the county commission."
