MSP offering tips to prevent identity theft

MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Michigan State Police are reaching out to help people protect themselves from identity fraud.

Studies show 12.6 million people were victims of identity fraud in 2012, which equates to one victim every three seconds.

MSP says the first step to prevent ID theft is safeguarding your personal information.

Here are some tips that can help to keep your identity safe:

  • Never give out identifying information by phone, mail, internet or in-person.
  • Order and review your credit report yearly to check for unauthorized activity.
  • Thoroughly review financial and credit card statements.
  • Also, remove mail from the mailbox as soon as possible.
