Afforable Care Act fully kicks in New Year's Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Affordable Care Act fully kicks in today.

More than 2 million people have signed up so far for health care coverage under the new law, according to officials with the health department.

But in order to have insurance coverage starting New Year's Day, those enrollees must have already paid their first premiums.

Under the Affordable Care Act, all Americans must have health care coverage or face a fine.

The law also guarantees no one can be denied coverage for pre-existing conditions, and promises equal rates for men and women alike.

Obama administration officials hope to have 7 million people enrolled by March 31.
