Standoff with armed suspect in Paw Paw is over

PAW PAW, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A standoff with an armed man in Paw Paw is over.

Police say this started as fight between a husband and a wife around 10:00 Wednesday night at a home on East Paw Paw Street near St. Mary's Catholic Church.

They say the man assaulted the woman and then fired a gun in the house. The woman was able to escape but police say the husband barricaded himself in the home.

Officers from Paw Paw, Mattawan, the Van Buren County Sheriff's Department, Michigan State Police and Grand Rapids were all brought in to negotiate with the man.

State police say it was a tricky situation because the homes in the neighborhood are so close. Several were evacuated as a precaution.

After about four hours police tell us the man came out of the home with out any issues.

1st LT. Dale Hinz, Paw Paw MSP Post Commander says the suspect suffered some minor self-inflicted injuries and had been transported to a local hospital for treatment.

He did not specify what those injuries were.

The incident remains under investigation.
