BC seeing brown water after main breaks, advisory issued
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The deep freeze is causing all sorts of water main breaks across the area.
There's been at least four this weekend in Battle Creek, hurting the city's water system. Newschannel 3's Aaron Dimick spoke with some residents who live near the break.
Ben Shaffer and his family woke up to dry faucets Sunday morning. "We just thought the pipes had froze throughout the whole complex," he says.
A pipe froze alright, but it was a water main at the corner of Parkway and Jordan.
The Battle Creek Public Works Department says the main most likely burst after freezing, sending water gushing into the streets and creating a huge sinkhole.
This knocked out water service to the Parkway Manor Apartments, "not being able to take a shower or do dishes, get the house clean, make bottles. We got two babies in the house," Shaffer says.
The city says this was the second water main break in Battle Creek Sunday and the fourth this weekend.
People all over the city could see their water turn brown. "The couch is about the color of the water earlier today," says David Carney, who lives near one of the breaks. His family has been using bottled water instead of the murky mixture.
"We've called a couple neighbors and everybody has rusty water around here. But it seems to be clearing up soon," Carney says.
Battle Creek has issued a boil water advisory for the Parkway Manor Apartments and the surrounding area. The city says to boil any water used for cooking or cleaning up for one minute to kill bacteria. Do this for the next 24 hours.
While this is frustrating to some, others realize this is just part of winter. "Cold weather is not a friend to anybody," Carney says. "It's always a bad time."
