(NEWSCHANNEL 3) The Van Buren County Sheriffs Office says they arrested a 65-year-old man from Mattawan they say failed to stop after being involved in a crash on his way from a meeting with his parole officer. Deputies say they came across a two vehicle crash in Antwerp Township on January 3rd that had just occurred on Red Arrow Highway near County Road 652. Deputies noted that the at fault vehicle sped off from the scene without stopping. After quickly checking on the vehicle that had been struck and determining that the driver was shaken but ok, deputies gave chase to the fleeing vehicle, catching up after it drove into a garage. Deputies then discovered a 57-year-old man and his brother, who initially denied being involved in a crash even though their vehicle had significant front end damage and had been driving on a flat tire sustained in the crash. After arresting the driver, he admitted that he failed to stop since his license was suspended and both he and his brother were on parole. Further investigation revealed that both brothers had just left their parole officers and while on their way home had stopped to buy some alcohol, becoming involved in the accident on their way home. Neither man had been drinking before the crash. The suspects brother was not arrested.
