Employers optimistic on jobs for coming year

WEST MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - When it comes to jobs and economic growth in West Michigan, employers are expecting this year to be a good one.

A recent study by the Employers Association of Grand Rapids shows many are optimistic about hiring, sales and productivity.

However, they are facing challenges in the form of government regulation with employers still unsure about what the healthcare changes will ultimately mean.

"Everybody's kind of trying to figure out what that impact is really going to be and what it's really going to mean to their bottom line because nobody really knows for sure exactly how much it's going to cost," said Maggie McPhee, Director of Information Services at The Employers Assoc.

In other areas, pay increases are not expected to climb too much this year with the average being in the two percent range. And more employers are expected to train employees in-house rather than seeking outside candidates for skilled positions.
