State Police hold 'shop with a cop' event in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Dozens of West Michigan students got the chance to shop with a cop today, and troopers from the Michigan State Police made the most of their time with the children, as well.

They picked up the 30 kids from their schools in Kalamazoo and Van Buren Counties, then headed to lunch at Arby's.

The troopers then took the children shopping at the Meijer off of West Main in Kalamazoo.

The kids chosen range from those who are being bullied, who need a boost of confidence, and with an economic need.

"We have kids whose parents are incarcerated," explained Michigan State Police Sergeant Scott Ernstes. "This tells them police aren't bad, and (the kids) deserve it."

Once the kids were done shopping, the troopers dropped them back off at school.

The sergeant added that none of this would have been possible without the help of generous sponsors.
